CANOEING ON THE KLONG SOK RIVER
We booked a half day canoeing on the Klong Sok River and from memory it cost us about 1200baht each from a little tour desk in Khao Lak, this tour can also be booked from hotels and tour desks in Khao Sok National Park. The actual day from Khao Lak was about 7 hours which included travel to the river etc.
The tour was great, though I think we must have picked the hottest day to do it as it was unbearable at times out on the water. It was such a relief for a few seconds when we could shelter under some overhanging branches.
I cannot remember where the tour left from but we were taken to a lovely secluded area where there was a little park and a few buildings where monks lived.
There were a few shrines and a long narrow cave we had to walk through to get to the river. This was great and at the end we were given little bags of fish food and told not to do anything with it until we were in our canoes.
Then we realized why, as soon as the first bit of fish food hit the water we were surrounded by hundreds of fighting fish, they were jumping out of the water, splashing and fighting for the food.
Then off we went, it seemed like we were canoeing for hours. We went through some of the stillest waters, then around the bend through little rapids.
There were monkeys, snakes, hundreds of birds, monitor lizards, it was fantastic.
After about 3 hours of canoeing we were thinking when are we going to turn around and head back to the start, then our guides pulled into a little rocky beach. They pulled the canoes out and up the side of the bank through the bushes onto a tiny track and at the end was a road.
One of the guides wives turned up to collect the boats and we all sat around talking until our driver turned up. Of course the ice-cream man went past so we all had ice creams as well!! Amazing what you can find out in the middle of nowhere.
Our guides and driver were fantastic and on the way back to Khao Lak our driver even stopped at a roadside stall and bought himself and us a huge bag of rambutans. He would not take any money for them.
It was so relaxing gliding down the Klong Sok River, perfectly safe and we highly recommend this tour.
